General
- Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) is one of Scotland's leading environmental charities, administering anti-litter and waste awareness campaigns in Scotland. Its anti-litter campaigns have been run under the slogan of Keep Scotland Tidy for nearly forty years.
- Keep Scotland Tidy's "Food on the go" litter campaign is an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of food and drink-related litter found on Scotland's streets.
- The campaign was launched in 2007, with the help of Keep Scotland Tidy's newly commissioned litter mascots. They, and a team of Litter Scene Investigators, recreated a scene of crime in the middle of a busy, pedestrianised shopping street in Glasgow. Outdoor advertising in towns and cities throughout Scotland, and fast food outlets throughout the country were invited to display posters on their premises to target customers at the point of sale.
- Since 2007, Keep Scotland Tidy has been working with national fast food businesses on an ongoing basis to promote the anti-litter message.
- An awareness raising event was held on 24th July, 2009, at Luss, organised by Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and Argyll and Bute Council.
Food On The Go Litter
- The term "Food On The Go litter"refers not only to food debris, but to all items relating to food-on-the-go - including the containers in which take-away food is packaged; chip wrappers, burger or pizza boxes; packaging of other food-on-the-go, such as sandwich boxes and bakery bags, sweetie wrappers, and crisp packets; drinks bottles; and also disposable barbeques.
- Food On The Go litter can be bad for business and tourism, dangerous to children and animals, attract rodents and encourage further anti-social behaviour.
- Food-on-the-go litter was found on 53% of Scottish streets in 2008/2009
